And overnight it’s summer The ground is soft and gives underfoot, malleable after so much rain Animal tracks inviting, not yet overgrown Soft baby origami-folded horse chestnut leaves dropping to the ground Occasional up-drafts lifting leaves from the ground, to hover and drift like chestnut coloured birds Frenzied birds in the trees and undergrowth Chiffchaff quaking and vibrating it’s wings at the top of the trees A vole venturing out, rummaging in leaf litter One small forked twig caught on a branch dancing and bobbing in the breeze Dry twittering of last years beech leaves bristling against each other
