The cuckoos are so loud and clear, it drowns out the thin mewling sound behind me. I eventually locate it to baby squirrels squabbling and crying.
It's warm and dark under the oaks, deep leaf litter makes a soft cushion to sit and meditate. Wet, splattery pats of rain on soft leaves overhead. Dog walkers head for home and I stay put happy to have the woods to myself. Me and these god forsaken midges, who multiply out of thin air and needle me inside my hood.
